Abstract: The key issues concerning the presence of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment are presented. The most important pathways of drugs entering aquatic ecosystems, problems associated with ecotoxicolog-ical risk assessment and the fate of pharmaceuticals in conventional wastewater treatment plants are discussed.
